How to Think About Business, Big, Small and Inbetween
I suspect that this is a secret desire for most people who start a business but somehow feel ashamed to verbalize it or to actually put it in action.
But Richard Branson did it. So did Oprah Winfrey, Tim Ferriss and countless others. I don’t think one should wait 5, 10 or more years to make it a reality either.
I desire to make my business 100% self-sufficient by its second year. And I’m proud of that.
Think about it! Rather than do what FaceBook CEO did, which is learn to fill the role of a CEO, I would rather hire a more competent CEO and an entire support team to run the entire business as soon as possible.
So where would that leave me?
I intend to be the Visionary/Consultant/Advisor. That’s enough for me. Being paid for that role is the goal… because a company without the person with the vision will surely perish, but that doesnt mean I need to be involved in the day-to-day running of it.
How do I plan to do it? As soon as it is evident that I’m in over my head I shall make a speedy exit to the side lines and focus on mastering the role of the Visionary.
Most VCs want to see the Founder(s) stay in the business actively for as long as possible because they think they bring the most value. On the other hand I’ve heard of VCs forcibly replacing the Founder(s) because of incompetence.
How about you - What do you think?

- Why am I in business in the first place???
This matters a GREAT deal. It sets the precedent for pretty much everything to do with the business… Why you get up in the mornings, why you go to certain events, why you hang out with a certain group of people, and I could go on, and on, and on.
If you don’t really know your “Why”, you will feel lost at times. Things will feel pointless. Sometimes this leads to half-hearted attempts to get the business going. Sometimes it leads to failure. So a strong, compelling “Why” is the answer… find one that propels you forward. One that make you can’t wait to get out of bed each morning. That is the kind of “Why we all need.
So how do you get that kind of “Why” - ikigai is a Japanese solution that the world is slowly adopting. Give it a go and see how it helps you.
Your bottom-line is ALWAYS your “Why”
